All about breast shapes

Let’s dispel the myth that all boobs are alike.
Because let’s be real here – they’re not!

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes as do sports bras. That’s why, even though we’re super sure we’ve got the right sports bra size, it still might not fit comfortably.

Knowing your breast shape can be a great help – it means less guessing when it comes to the bras you choose and, of course, less bounce!

Round Breasts

These breasts are full and round, equally full at the top and bottom, coming to a small point in the middle. If you’ve had breast implants, you will most likely have this shape.

Sports Bra suggestions:

Most sports bra manufacturers create their products with this shape in mind, so generally all sports bras work on this type. If you have breast implants, we would recommend getting a virtual fitting with one of our experts to determine the best fit for you. Alternatively, something that can stretch and form to your shape, like a hybrid or compression style.

Asymmetric Breasts

This is when one breast is larger than the other. It’s actually very common, with most women having slightly uneven breasts, the difference tends to be one cup size or less.

Sports Bra suggestions:

Always fit for your largest breast and fill out your smaller breast.

If your unevenness is over a cup size try to find bras with the option to add or remove breast enhancers, this can help you customise the fit to even out your smaller breast.

We recommend trying sports bras that are a compression or hybrid style. Stay away from encapsulation and underwired sports bras as they can be harder to fit. Compression and hybrid styles will offer more elasticity and stretch to comfortably fit both breasts without gaping.

Styles to Try:

Limitless – This adjustable sports bra is recommended for A-C cup and has two sets of removable padding in the cups, no underwire and is a T-back style. You can adjust the straps and band to give you the right fit every time.

Omega/ Ball-Shaped Breasts

This shape is more commonly seen on large cupped breasts (DD+). It is generally characterised by being fuller at the bottom but having a slim top.

Sports Bra suggestions

Go for full cupped sports bras – these will add additional support to the thinner top of your breast and avoid that dreaded quad boob effect.

Go for high support where possible –the thin top in comparison to the fuller bottom means you may need more support than other shapes to keep you comfortable and bounce free.

Avoid low support styles – these will only cause discomfort and create a quad boob.

East West Breasts

This is when the breasts gravitate to either side of the chest. The nipples generally end up pointing outwards instead of to the front. The east west shape is most common on smaller breasts. (A – C cup).

Sports Bra suggestions

Try padded sports bras – these can help gather your breast tissue to the front instead of to the sides.

Go for a sports bra with good side support – this will allow for a more secure fit.

Side Set Breasts

Side set breasts are like east-west breasts – where the breast tissue gravitates to the sides, however side set breasts are generally larger and fuller with the nipples pointing to the front. There is also a little more space between each breast than the east – west shape. If you struggle to create cleavage, having side set boobs might be the reason for this.

Sports Bra suggestions

Try sports bras with a bit more cup padding – these can help gather your breast tissue to the front instead of to the sides.

Go for a bra with good side support – this will allow for a more secure fit.

Slim Breasts

These breasts look slim, long and sometimes tuberous in shape with the nipple pointing downward. Generally, this shape is seen on smaller breasts. (A – C cup) Because of their slimness individuals with slim breasts might struggle to find a good fitting bra. Sports bras with underwire tend to be too wide for this shape, so normally the sports bra ends up being worn on the chest, too far below the breast tissue. This means slim breasts lose out on a lot of support!

Sports Bra suggestions

Avoid underwire where possible – this style can prevent your breasts from getting the support they need.

Compression sports bras are great because they secure the breast tissue without wires.

If you want to experiment, try out some hybrid styles of sports bra. These might provide some more shape without the uncomfortable or unsupportive fit.

Styles to Try:

Swemark Movement Sports Bra – This hybrid style will you give you a nice shape, while also ensuring you get the right support. You’ll have great side support and full cup coverage in this sports bra.

Triaction Extreme Lite – Also a hybrid, this sports bra has an extra wide band and multiway straps. It’ll give you that uplift you’re looking for and ensure you’re ready for that run!

Shock Absorber Multi Support – This style is perfect for protecting all your breast tissue. The wide shape and hybrid style ensure ultimate support and comfort.

Tear Drop Breasts

Like the round shape but tend to be less full at the top. They can be spotted by the nipple which will likely be set in the middle or be facing upward. This shape tends to fit most styles of sports bra, but underwired ones can be particularly good as it gives more support at the bottom where the breast is fuller.

Sports Bra suggestions

If your breasts are larger (DD+) go for an encapsulated style to support the bottom of your breasts.

Underwired sports bras will ensure the bottom of your breasts is completely supported.

Styles to Try:

Freya Active Core Underwired Sports Bra – The underwire and shape of this sports bra will ensure your breasts have ample support.

Panache Ultimate Sports Bra – The light padded cups and underwire on this sports bra means you’ll beat the bounce. The full cup coverage and padded straps will let you forget you’re even wearing a sports bra.

Relaxed Breasts

These breasts have lax tissue and tend to have nipples that point downwards.

Sports Bra suggestions

Go for moulded cups to help support your shape, or underwired sports bras which will provide some additional support and lift.

Make sure the band is thick enough to support your breasts, along with ensuring the sports bra has thicker straps to lift the breast tissue comfortably.

A racerback or racerback option (like a j-hook) may also help to give additional lift.

Styles to Try:

Panache Ultimate Sports Bra – This underwired sports bra has lightly padded cups and a j-hook option to make the straps racerback. It’ll ensure you have a nice shape and that uplift that relaxed breasts need.

Freya Active Underwired Crop Top – The underwire and shape of this sports bra will ensure your breasts have ample support. It will also ensure that you have a nice shape!

Anita Dynamix Sports Bra – This non-wired sports bra has a wide band and extra wide straps for ultimate support. The full cup coverage also ensures you get a nice shape and ample side support.

Athletic Breasts

Athletic breasts tend to be more wide and muscular. They tend to also have less breast tissue so generally are seen on A-C cups. Athletic shapes have the opposite problem of slim shaped breasts. Athletically shaped breast tissue is wider than the usual archetypal breast shape which can make it hard for people with athletic breasts to find the right shape and fit.

Sports Bra suggestions

Avoid underwired sports bras – sports bras with underwire are built for archetypal breasts that are slimmer than athletic breasts. So underwire can be uncomfortable and sit wrong on the breast tissue of the athletic shape.

Go for compression – these sports bras will provide enough support for many with this shape as they are wire free and are great for people with less breast tissue.

Styles to Try:

FiiT Ebony Bra – This sports bra is effective and flattering, with a high neck crop top design. It's made from a comfortable, breathable fabric and the removable pads provide a soft silhouette, while helping to keep the breasts in place during exercise.

Shock Absorber Multi Support – This style is perfect for protecting all your breast tissue. The wide shape and hybrid style ensure ultimate support and comfort.
