What is it? An aquathlon is a race which is formed of 1 swim segment placed in between 2 runs. Thanks to the distances within the race, an aquathon is a great introduction for anyone wishing to either looking to ease themselves into triathlon training or those who feel like setting themselves new challenges. The International Triathlon Union’s (ITU) official distances for their annual Aquathon World Championships are a 2.5km run, 1km swim, and another 2.5km run. Depending on the weather conditions and the time of year, the ITU’s race can become a 1km swim with 2 x 5km runs if the water temperature is lower than 22 degrees. What fitness levels is it suitable for? An aquathon is perfect for novices who’d like to start exploring multisports and also for experienced athletes who want to switch things up and vary their training and/or training. Where can I do it? Aquathons take place all over the world, meaning that if you decide to get serious with your racing, you’ll have the opportunity to travel! In 2018, the ITU Multisports World Championship Festival was held in Fyn, Denmark. Don’t worry if you’re not ready to globetrot quite yet, there are plenty of local British aquathlons to get started with. We suggest checking the British Triathlon website for race news and updates.
